LEAKING FAUCET AND LEAKAGES

Leaking Faucet and Water waste as a result of leakage the basics.

As you are reading this you are probably looking for some help with a leaking faucet, and that is the right step into saving you money and headache caused by an ordinary faucet leak. Let's face it everything this days is going up. Cost of living has skyrocketed in past few years, the gas prices are high and pretty much everything in between has gone up (Phone bill, internet bill, Hydro, Enbridge and food among others). But did you know that the sink that you may notice is leaking a bit is costing you money by the minute?

Sure you may shrug it off as a very miserable cost as compared to things listed above, but money is money and flushing all the hard earn money isn't fun or something anyone wants to do. 10% of all water consumptions by Canadian comes from Kitchen usage and simple water consumptions. Now that does not sound like much but keep in mind that you also use additional 20% of water for laundry, 30% for toilet flushing, 5% for cleaning and finally 35% of water is used for Shower and Bathtub (and we can't blame anyone here, we also love a good shower or nice bubble bath).

Now lets get to some leakage numbers. Let's say your faucet is dripping at a rate of one drop of water per second, that is 34 Liters of water that is literally being flushed down the drain at your wallets expense. 34 Liters of water is a big amount of water that is being wasted due to a leak and that's not the end, now lets times this number by average of 30 days (1 month) and the number we get is 1020 Liters or 269.45 US Gallons of water being wasted. That may not sound like much but keep it mind an average person uses 251 Liters of water, but if you have kids that number is larger due to much larger use of dishwasher and laundry as well as shower or tub.

If water waste is left unattended in a year worth of time the water waste is at around 12,240 Liters or 3233.47 US Gallons. Now it's not always because you may have a leak or a bad cartridge in your faucet that causing all this headache. Toilet Flushing can also be considered a leakage in its own unique way. But my toilet isn't leaking you may say. And you are 100% correct, however in older toilets the consumption of water is massive as compared to the new toilets and new toilet technologies with advanced low water volume, high flush ratio. In the newer toilets even slightly cheaper models (not all truth, so keep that in mind) you will be getting better savings as this toilet are better designed to use low amounts of water with average to good flush pressure to wash away everything down the drain.

If you have a plumber over fixing your faucet leakage you might as well ask them to take a peek at your toilet and give you their rating and feedback on water volume to flush ratio. As with everything time is the enemy. In case of faucets and why they eventually start to leak it’s the same story with a bit of a twist. Most faucet leaks are caused by wear and tear of the parts inside, your water hardness also contributes.

If you got a very Calcium rich water you may notice a lot of plumbing and drain breakups as things get damaged, destroyed or clogged due to calcium or calcium buildup inside the parts. This is rather easy fixable but requires the purchase of a water softener system and preferably one that can soften the water for the whole house, but this will cost you a bit to install. However it's completely worth it in the long run. Now let's get back to the causes of leaks.

Most common mini leak or as you may see it as or know it as is "dripping". When you notice that your faucet is dripping at the sprout you can rest assured its properly the rubber seal that gave up and is now letting water truth, and this is how you get those annoying little drips. Another leak problem is in the connection between the sprout and the sink. The area were the sprout is affixed to the sink (and cover piece) contains variety of sprout seals. And lastly the last cause of the leak can be the cartridge. Swapping the washer is rather easy but replacing the cartridge isn't as easy as it may look, and with that we suggest for more serious problem you give a licensed plumber a call so he can handle you're problem in professional matter.
